Give environment-friendly gifts this ChristmasManila (November 11) --Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje is encouraging the public to make Mother Nature happy this Yuletide season by giving environmentally friendly gifts.
“We urge everyone to think green when they give gifts for Christmas,” said Paje, adding that such “gifts need not be expensive or wrapped fancily, and can even be in the form of activities that promote advocacy for environmental causes.”
For one, Paje recommended giving plants, whether in pots that would be used in the home or in gardens, or as seedlings that would be planted in a tree planting activity by the family. “They only have to coordinate with the nearest DENR office for designated areas for tree planting,” he said.
Paje further proposed patronizing products of companies or organizations known to implement green practices in their business processes, and for the public to “buy products that are made of recyclable materials, or have been produced out of recycled materials, including goods made by local cottage industries. “
The DENR chief suggests foregoing the usual gift wrappers and instead packaging gifts in “bayong” or reusable bags as a way of reducing the amount of disposable plastic bags that clog the nation’s waterways.
