Mindoro farmers expect yield increase due to new technologyCALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, Jan. 1 (PIA) – The Focused Food Production Assistance for Vulnerable Sector program of the European Union has been implemented by the provincial government in cooperation with the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). Last December 3, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the provincial government represented by Dr. Marpheo E. Marasigan, executive assistant of the governor, and the University of the Philippine-Los Banos, Laguna, represented by Director Gil C. Saguiguit of SEARCA. Oriental Mindoro is one of the six pilot provinces in the country. The program’s primary purpose is to help farmers see increase in their production and thus ensure food security. The farmers were introduced to new technologies in planting palay as well as in raising fruits and vegetables with the use of organic fertilizers. They were also given native female carabaos, chicken, ducks, marine fin fish, fingerlings for their livelihood activities. (PIO-PIA/Louie T. Cueto) |
