P165-M meat processing plant to rise in Ilocos Sur

by Ben P. Pacris

NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur, Jan. 01 (PIA) -- National Tobacco Administration (NTA) head Edgardo Zaragoza bared that a P165 million meat processing plant will rise in this agricultural town in 2012 to help alleviate poverty in line with the Millennium Development Goals.

“This is in line with President Aquino’s poverty reduction program to raise the quality of life of the farmers,” administrator Zaragoza said during a press conference at his residence here last week.

Zaragoza said that the plant will process meat products and the NTA will provide production assistance or capital for the hog and poultry raising projects, not only of tobacco growers but also to other farmers for additional income.

“Our mandate is to improve the economic and living conditions and raise the quality of life of the tobacco farmers and to make agriculture a solid basis for industrialization,” the former Board member of the second district said.

NTA’s Tobacco Dust Processing Plant was built in Sto. Tomas, La Union during the past regime. Zaragoza said that he will not push for the development and commercialization of other industrial uses of tobacco.

It was recalled that during the administration of Carlitos Encarnacion, a native of Vigan, the NTA pushed for the development and commercialization of the Tobacco Dust Processing Plant, which produced fertilizer for fishpond and the tobacco virgin pulp for various types of paper including tobacco extract as pesticide.

Zaragoza said that he will prioritize the development and stabilization of the the tobacco industry being the “life blood” of the Ilocanos, and to help the Philippine economy under P-Noy. “We will give priority attention to market driven quality tobacco production,” he added.
