SLU freshman to represent CAR in stat quizBaguio City (November 26) – The Cordillera Region will be represented by a college freshman from Saint Louis University(SLU) in the national finals of the 19th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) to be held on December 8 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas auditorium in Quezon City.
Gabrielle Paul S. Pascual, a Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) freshman of SLU topped 33 other freshmen from 17 colleges and universities in the region in the regional finals last November 23 to earn the right to represent CAR in the national finals.Pascual’s coach is Nora Umalla-De Vera.
The regional finalists and their respective coaches outside National Capital Region shall be provided with roundtrip fares. Accommodation and allowance of all regional champions and coaches will also be provided by the PSQ organizers.
Runner up winners for the CAR regional finals were SLU Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering freshman Vaniele T. Mariñas and University of Cordilleras Bachelor of Science in Accountancy freshman Eileen D. Lopez, who won second and third place, respectively.
The regional winners were given cash prizes and plaques of recognition. Their respective coaches and their college or university were also given certificates of recognition. These are in addition to cash prizes, trophies, and several gift items from various sponsors and donors at stake for the top five winners in the PSQ national finals.
According to National Statistics Office -CAR regional director Olivia Gulla, the PSQ is an annual contest designed to test the knowledge in statistics of first-time Filipino college freshmen currently enrolled in the second semester of the school year 2010-2011. This is also a venue to instill the value of statistics among students and to measure the effectiveness of high school statistics.
The regional PSQ was spearheaded by the NSO and Commission on Higher Education, with the assistance from the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee in the Cordilleras.
This year’s board of judges was chaired by NSO-Mt. Province provincial statistics officer Adrian A. Cerezo with regional highway patrol unit deputy chief P/Supt. Severino B. Agustin and NSO-Benguet Statistical Coordination officer Ma. Theresa B. Bagsangi as members.**Lito Dar/PIA
