Zero casualty in Davao’s New Year revelryby Carina L. Cayon
DAVAO CITY, Jan. 02 (PIA) -- Davaoeños celebrated Christmas and welcomed the year 2012 peacefully, marking zero incidence of firecracker casualties in the city.
However, the local government here reported the apprehensions of 91 violators of the firecracker ban that the city has been enforcing for nine years.
Davao City Public Safety Command Center head Engr. Jaime Adalin said that 49 of the violators were minors.
Adalin told the media here in today’s Kapihan sa Dabaw that most of the violators came from the areas of Sta. Ana, Talomo, Marfori Heights in Bajada, Toril and Sasa.
He said though that the city government is awaiting the complete reports from the police.
Davao City was the first in the country to impose the banning of firecrackers under its City Ordinance on Firecrackers or the City Ordinance No. 060-02, Series of 2002.
The Ordinance bans the trade and transport, and exploding of firecrackers in the entire city. Other local government units have since replicated said regulation.
Both City Mayor Sara Duterte and Vice-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte strongly warned the public to strictly follow the Ordinance, and put in place a reward system for those who can report incidence and violators to the authorities. (PIA-11/Carina L. Cayon)
