DOH in NorMin implements massive leptospirosis prophylaxisby Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob
OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, Jan. 2 (PIA) -Ė The Department of Health-Center for Health Development in Northern Mindanao (DOH-CHD 10) will implement massive leptospirosis propylaxis in Typhoon Sendong flashflood-affected areas, both in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities.
ďThis time, the directly observed treatment scheme (DOTS) in Tuberculosis management will be used, because we want to be sure that people really take in the medicine in our presence,Ē Dr. Dave Mendoza, Head of the Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit of DOH-CHD 10, said.
Mendoza said DOH-CHD 10 had been receiving reports that suspected leptospirosis infection cases in Cagayan de Oro, including Iligan City, has reached 128, of which five died. But this assumption was only based on clinical and not on laboratory tests.
He also said many of the admitted patients were given lepstospirosis prophylaxis medicines but did not drink it and that most of them did not stay in evacuation centers (ECís).
Meanwhile, an intensified information, education and communication (IEC) drive on leptospirosis was conducted by the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) Teams in the ECís, through the distribution of pamphlets.
Likewise, DOH-CHD 10 has validated the available spaces in the ECís for the installation of 86 portable toilets to address the problem of the lack of latrines and comfort rooms in ECís that do not have enough water for flushing of toilets.
Continuous assessment of the DOH-CHD 10 WASH Teams in the ECís is also conducted for the construction of open pit latrines in selected areas of the ECís and for the NGOís to put up Eco-sanitary toilets.
As to garbage disposal, about 90% of the ECís are utilizing the local garbage bins like ďsakoĒ or empty sacks and plastic bags.
Thus, DOH-CHD 10 had started distributing 1,000 garbage bags to the ECís while garbage collection is done by the local government units (LGUís) for disposal at the City dumpsite, since about 90% of the ECís have no vermin control measures. (PIA-10 Mis. Occ.)
