NorMin hospitals now on “Code Red” status due to leptospirosis outbreak

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, Jan. 3 (PIA) – All hospitals in Cagayan de Oro City, especially, the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) have been placed on “Code Red” status, following the declaration of a leptospirosis outbreak in the city by the Department of Health (DOH) region 10.

Dr. Jaime Bernadas, Regional Director of DOH-10, made the declaration after a total of 200 charts and records of admissions and outpatient consultations from the different hospitals in the city was reviewed last December 29-31.

Based on record, 99 percent of the patients were not staying in evacuation centers.

Of these records, 128 fitted the case definition of suspected leptospirosis, with patients ages ranging from one (1) year to 75 years old. Eighty-one percent of the patients were males (or 113 out of 139).

The case study also showed Barangay Macasandig had the highest incidence, or 25 cases, followed by Balulang with 16 cases, Consolacion, Bulua and Puntod, nine (9) cases each, Carmen and Iponan, eight (8) cases, each, Barangy 13 with six (6) cases and Kauswagan and Barra, five (5) cases, each.

There were also five (5) deaths with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 3.9 percent.

Thus, Bernadas said there is an ongoing outbreak of Leptospirosis in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, especially, in areas affected by the flash floods brought about by Typhoon Sendong, where many people died, injured, missing and displaced.

Majority of those affected with leptospirosis waded or swam in flood waters, which resulted in morbidities ranging from acute respiratory infections, injuries, fever and leptospirosis, among others, Bernadas said.

According to the website, "a disease outbreak happens when a disease occurs in greater numbers than expected in a community or region, or during a season. An outbreak may occur in one community or even extend to several countries. It can last from days to years.

"Sometimes a single case of a contagious disease is considered an outbreak. This may be true if it is an unknown disease, is new to a community, or has been absent from a population for a long time." (PIA-10 Mis. Occ.)
