The youth only need opportunity to serve, says NYC Chair

by Precie Catherine C. Cuarto

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 4 (PIA) -- “Nandito lang ang kabataan; hindi naman talaga sila nawawala (The youth are here; they have not deserted us),” said National Youth Commission Chairperson Leon Flores in response to an editorial in a major newspaper that asked where the youth have gone.

According to Flores, many young people gave up their Christmas vacation just to help the victims of tropical storm Sendong. Youth from as far as Manila, Cebu, and various provinces and municipalities did volunteer work during Sendong’s onslaught in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan city.

“The youth are helping. They just have to be given an opportunity to serve and to contribute,” said Flores.

“It is okay for us (youth) to help, to carry loads, to clean creeks, build shelters in the communities; but we need more than that. You can give us these tasks, but it would be better if you could give us something we can really meaningfully participate. That’s what we want to do now,” Flores added.

Flores further said many young professionals who top notched in nursing and medicine fields are now serving as role models by choosing to stay and practice their expertise in the country.

“It’s something that really brings us hope that it’s true enough, ‘not all youth want to leave the country. A great number of youth today want to participate in governance and nation building,” said Flores.

The NYC Chairperson who concurrently sits as member (representing the youth sector) of the Office of the President's Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC), said he was pleased to see young people working with cabinet members, senators, and congressmen.

Flores said the youth are now more encouraged to participate in government programs because of the administration direction towards "daang matuwid" or straight path in governance.

Flores was guest in today’s episode of Talking Points radio program aired over People’s Television-4 and Radyo ng Bayan stations nationwide. (PCCC/PIA-GHQ)
