Feature: Batac’s Save the Quiaoit River project is answer to environmental decay

by Cristina Arzadon

BATAC CITY, Jan. 3 (PIA) -- The lingering effect of tropical storm Sendong in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao has alerted authorities of the need to review their environmental protection plans.

In this city for example, the project “Save the Quiaoit River, the Mountains and the Watershed,” continues to gain ground with the full support of the communities and a multi-sectoral group of government and non-government organizations including the schools and the mass media.

The river is one of two major waterways of Batac that straddles the poblacion and drains towards its neighboring town Paoay. Stretching to 19.5 kilometers, it traverses eight urban and seven rural villages namely Valdez, Ablan, Caunayan, San Julian, Lacub, Barani, Ben-Agan and Palpalicong, Quiling Sur, Parangopong, Mabaleng, Colo, Payao, Quiom and Maipalig.

The city government launched the project in 2009 in response to the worsening effects of global warming and climate change and incessant flooding within Batac and its neighboring towns.

Batac Mayor Jeffrey Nalupta said the project is the city’s most socially-relevant, environmental advocacy.

Since 2009, residents have been continuously planting narra and mahogany seedlings in the city’s mountain villages and in at least 4,000 hectares of watershed areas. The project is re-launched from June to October of every year to solicit a wider participation from other sectors and to ensure that seedlings that have planted are nurtured.

“This is Batac’s single project with the widest participation,” Nalupta said noting that the city officials and employees, non-governmental organizations, barangay and SK officials, churches, schools, private institutions, the media and school organizations have thrown their support to the project.
