School nurses undergo training on nutrition

by Gigi Dumallig

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan. 4(PIA) -- Public school nurses in this city recently underwent training on government nutrition program to improve their knowledge and skills in promoting good nutrition in their areas.

Provincial nutritionist Frances Sebastian said that school nurses play a very important role in providing the right information on nutrition not only to the teachers and school children but also to parents.

Through lectures and demonstrations, the participants were trained on Infant and Young Child Feeding, Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, and on Nutrition Guidelines for Filipinos to arm them with the proper information and also improve their interpersonal communication skills.

Said training aims to carry out the World Health Organization feeding practices especially among infants and children and to promote the production and consumption of eggs and vegetables in every home and community.

Like many Filipinos, children in the province continue to suffer from malnutrition because of poor feeding practices or that parents are not economically capable to buy food, Sebastian explained.

To address these problems, the government she said, has formulated the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) where one of its components is to “Promote Good Nutrition” by improving the food and nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Filipino families.

Through the school nurses, the health department of the province targets to increase the awareness of the community on the importance of providing the family the right food and how to produce food with nutritional value in their own backyards, Sebastian said.

According to Sebastian, there are many fertile lands and enough spaces to raise poultry in the province, that if properly utilized, could provide enough nutritional food for the family’s daily consumption of vegetable and poultry products such as eggs.

Backyard gardening coupled with poultry production she said would not only ensure nutritious food on the table but could also be developed as a source of additional family income.

It is encouraged that the activity should involve all members of the family for better appreciation especially among the children to learn the value of eating good food, she said.

Vegetable gardens in schools as beautification projects would also encourage more school children to appreciate vegetable production and consumption, she added.(JDP/GGD-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
