Aklan, AusAID sign MOA for road improvement

by Venus G. Villanueva

KALIBO, Aklan, January 4 (PIA6) -- The province of Aklan, through Governor Carlito S. Marquez, and the Australian AID for International Development (AusAID) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Provincial Road Network Management Facilities program.

The program, according to Engr. Roger Esto, Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator who witnessed the MOA signing, entails the rehabilitation and improvement of Aklan’s provincial road network.

Esto said that under the set-up, Aklan will receive P40 million yearly for three years for the implementation of the project, while Aklan will provide a 12 percent counterpart for the project.

The assistance from AusAID is a welcome development, Esto added, as the province has no fund source for rehabilitation and improvement of vital road networks in Aklan.

According to the PPDO to be prioritized are road networks of far-flung municipalities so that farmers in the areas will find it easier to bring their produce to the market.

The grant from Australia is also seen to generate jobs because manpower will also be sourced in the areas where the road networks will be rehabilitated.

Presently, the project is on its assessment stage to be facilitated by the Provincial Engineer’s Office and AusAID consultants.

“The province also stands to get a bonus of another P40 million if implementation of the projects will be good,” Esto said.

If the province qualifies for the bonus, Esto said the amount will also be used for further improvement of Aklan’s provincial roads. (JCM/VGV PIA 6 Aklan)
