Abra dad vows to build more roads for agri development

by Maritess B. Beñas

BANGUED, Abra, Jan. 5 (PIA) -- Governor Eustaquio P. Bersamin vowed to finish all on-going road construction projects in the province, despite expected decrease in the share of the local government units (LGUs) for the fiscal year 2012.

“The farmers are the ones sustaining our economy in Abra since we are a purely agricultural province, so we have to give priority to the infrastructure support facilities that our farmers need to sustain their agricultural activities”, Bersamin said in his message of hope for the new year.

The governor said he will utilize the funds from the proceeds of the Republic Act 7171 funds, otherwise known as the Tobacco Excise Taxes, for the construction of farm-to-market roads especially the provincial roads, which are the major road networks that the farmers needs to transport their agricultural produce to the provincial center or to other market outlets.

Aside from the road building projects, Bersamin also vowed to increase the support to the farmers in terms of production inputs like fertilizer subsidies, and other farming tools and equipment such as water pumps and sprayers.

Relative to this, Esmeralda G. Valera, manager of the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) – Bangued Branch, reported that the NTA had started providing flue curing barns to the tobacco growers in the province in order to sustain the tobacco production in Abra.

Valera likewise reported that there are already other upland municipalities like Sallapadan and Bucloc, which have started to engage in the cultivation of tobacco after they have seen tobacco-growing municipalities receiving their regular share from the RA 7171 funds. (JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR,Abra)
