Maasin City disaster management council earmarks budget for 2012

by R.G. Cadavos

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Jan. 5 (PIA) –- In a meeting held Tuesday, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) allocated funds for the year 2012, five percent from the total Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) for the city of Maasin.

The gathering tackled the one-year term plan for the Council. The budget that was previously appropriated from P16,508,798.58 for the year 2011 was increased to PP21,759,295.10 for 2012.

The total budget was distributed into two, according to City Disaster Response Team leader Ritche Sumalinog - 70 percent for disaster preparedness that include seminars down to the barangay level; rescue, rehabilitation, and medical equipments; evacuation drills; construction of evacuation center and other mitigating structures; trainings for rescue teams, to name a few, totaling P12,192,706.57.

The 30 percent, meanwhile, is intended for the quick response fund which include food and medicines, construction materials, fuel and equipment rental among other miscellaneous expenses for disasters. This amounts to P9,566,588.53, totaling the CDRRMC budget to P21,759,295.10, the report said.

The CDRRMC meeting also discussed activities for the barangay DRRMC, particularly the insurance for BDRRMC members such as barangay chairman, barangay kagawads, Sangguniang Kabataan, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, day care workers, secretaries, and treasurers of the barangays throughout Maasin City.

On the other hand, a resolution was also filed requesting the release of funds to help the “Sendong”-stricken areas of Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City. The amount proposed was P50,000 for CDO and another P50,000 for Iligan City. (RGC/PIA-SoLeyte)
