DOH-EV to push for total ban on firecrackers during holidaysby Aurora J. Casimpan
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Jan 6 (PIA) –- The lessened injured by firecracker-related incidents in Eastern Visayas will not stop the Department of Health (DOH) in the region to push for the total ban on firecrackers during the annual holiday celebrations.
Boyd Cerro, of DOH said that while the health department is glad about the decline of casualties related to firecracker blasts, it will still aim for zero casualty during the holidays.
The aim will only materialize should total ban be imposed against firecrackers. In the region, the year 2011 reported 13 persons injured (as of this writing) compared to 56 injured persons in 2010.
Of the 13, eight were from Tacloban City, two from Maasin City, and one each from the towns of Tanauan and Palo in Leyte and in Catbalogan City.
It was learned that of the total injured, seven were considered “active” or who directly used the firecrackers while six were “passive” or those hit by blasts. The common used firecrackers were kwitis and five star.
While DOH is batting for a total ban on firecrackers, it admits that their power is only recommendatory and they will leave its realization to other agencies and Congress. (PIA-8)
