92 elem students in Region 1 qualifies for 2012 PSHSS scholarshipby Monette H. Herrera
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Jan. 06 (PIA) -- Around 92 student applicants in Region 1 qualified in the recent search for 2012 scholars of Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS), according to Mario Montejo, chair of the PSHSS Board of Trustees.
The search was in pursuant to Republic Act. No. 3661 or known as the PSHSS that mandates PSHS to offer, on a free scholarship basis, a secondary course with special emphasis on subjects pertaining to the sciences, with the end view of preparing its students for a science career.
This also falls under the Philippine Development Plan where it is one of the strategies of school institutions under the Department of Education, like the PSHSS to provide and expand scholarship programs in order to help students achieve better quality of education.
Moreover, PSHSS, an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology, Region 1 said out of the 19,925 who took the one step screening test nationwide, 23 from Ilocos Norte, 11 from Ilocos Sur, 17 from La Union and 41 from Pangasinan hurdled the test.
These qualifiers are entitled to a monthly stipend in addition to free tuition fee and free loan of textbooks.
Uniform and living allowances will also be provided according to financial need. However, qualified scholars are expected to meet the highest standard of scholastic achievement and behavior in their campus particularly PSHSS Ilocos Region Campus in Poblacion, San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur.
The last day of pre-enrolment of principal qualifiers is on February 10, 2012 and specific schedule of other enrolment activities shall be announced by the respective campus.
