Assistance to surrendered NPA leader in Abra assured

by Freddie G. Lazaro

NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur, Jan. 06 (PIA) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured that assistance will be accorded to newly surrendered leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Abra last Wednesday.

Colonel Eliseo Posadas, commander of the army’s 503rd Brigade based in Lagangilang, Abra, told Thursday that the surrendered NPA leader Arnel Balucas, 35, a resident from Barangay Danilo, Malibcong, Abra, is entitled to the benefits from the social integration program of the Aquino administration.

“Initially, the army’s 503rd Brigade and Abra Governor Eustaquio Bersamin gave cash assistance to Balucas including a scholarship grant for him to continue his studies,” Posadas said.

He disclosed that Balucas alias “Ka Layag” is a political officer of the CPP – NPA and head of the Education Committee of the NPA’s Abra Committee of the Agustin Begnalen NPA Command operating in the mountainous areas in Cordillera region.

Balucas surrendered voluntarily last Wednesday to the joint elements from the army and the police in Abra province through the help of Malibcong town Vice Mayor Joseph Dugay.

The rebel returnee was picked up by the lawmen in the outskirt Sitio Agibo, Barangay Poblacion, Malibcong, Abra. (ANL/FGL-PIA 1 Ilocos Sur)
