Phil Army, PMA offer free medical services to Sendong victims in Dumaguete City

by Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 7 (PIA) -- The Philippine Army, together with the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) conducted relief operations, including medical assistance, for victims of tropical storm Sendong in Negros Oriental.

Eighty army personnel led by 302nd Brigade Commander, Col. Francisco Patrimonio provided security, transportation and manpower assistance to the simultaneous medical consultations, distribution of medicines and relief operations conducted by PMA.

Almost two weeks after tropical storm Sendong hit Dumaguete City and some parts of Negros Oriental, volunteer health practitioners joined hands in providing free medical consultations, medicines and distributions of relief goods.

The free medical services included general check-up, eye examination, minor surgery and food distribution.

At least 1,580 resident-victims of typhoon Sendong have benefited from the free medical services last week in eight most affected barangays in Dumaguete City, namely: Barangays of Candau-ay, Batinguel, Junob, Cadawinanon, Tabok Tubig, Poblacion 8, Bagacay Dapdap and Bagacay Gumamela.

Patrimonio said that the calamity showed once again that the spirit of Bayanihan among Filipino people is very crucial. “We encourage the Negrenses to be united and work together for the safety and well-being of everybody,” said Patrimonio.

Among the groups that participated in said medical mission were the Negros Oriental Provincial and City Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, National Telecommunications Commission, Federation of Volunteers thru Radio Communications, Sto Nino Augustinian Development Foundation.
