Coffee production to be expanded in two Quezon townsby Lito M. Giron
CANDELARIA, Quezon, January 7 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) organized a forum for coffee growers recently as a step to boost the coffee industry in the province.
About 30 coffee growers from the towns of Candelaria and Sariaya attended the forum.
Philip Oliveros, trade and industry development specialist of DTI-Quezon, said the forum aims to improve coffee production, increase earnings of coffee farmers and strengthen the coffee industry in the province.
He added that coffee production will be expanded in the barangays of Bukal Norte, Mayabo, Masalukot 3, Masalukot 4, Masalukot 5 in Candelaria town and in barangay Concepcion Banahaw in Sariaya town, which are part of the agrarian reform community (ARC) project of DAR-Quezon 1.
Under the project, DAR will provide coffee seedlings for distribution to coffee growers while the DTI will teach the farmers the proper cultivation of coffee. The DTI will also look for possible market for the coffee produced.
On the other hand, in support to the project, Nestle Philippines will set up coffee buying stations in the two towns for coffee farmers sell harvested coffee at the right price.
Meanwhile, the provincial government is supporting the development of coffee industry in the province by providing farmers with technical capabilities, access to capital and loans and marketing skills. (JMG, PIA-Quezon)
