Church official calls on Black Nazarene devotees to love the environment

by Jell E. Guzman

MANILA, Jan. 7 (PIA) -– Aside from showing love and devotion to the Black Nazarene, Quiapo Church Rector Msgr. Clemente Ignacio called on devotees to also show love for the environment.

Ignacio called on to devotees, and even onlookers to help them in attaining a clean environment during the grand celebration of the feast of the Black Nazarene Monday, January 9.

“Please be assured that Quiapo Church is responding to the need to the love the environment,” said Ignacio.

Environmental watchdog Eco Waste Coalition earlier appealed to church officials to remind the faithful to observe a meaningful and garbage-free celebration.

Ignacio also said that Quiapo Church is responding to the need to love the environment as well as remind the devotees not to litter.

He added that the church’s Ministry for Environmental Concerns has been active not just during fiestas but the whole year round.

The church official also thanked the city government of Manila for its active involvement in providing security to ensure the safety of devotees and spectators which usually draws around six to seven million.

More than 2,000 personnel from the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and barangay enforcers will be deployed to ensure peace and order, safety and cleanliness during and after the event.

This theme for this year’s feast of the Black Nazarene is "Espiritu ng Ama at ng poong Nazareno, Sambayanang Pilipino Ibangon mo."

According to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the annual celebration will include the overnight vigil with healing mass and catechesis at the Quirino grandstand on Sunday, January 8.

Meanwhile, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle will lead the Eucharistic celebration Monday, January 9 at six o’clock in the morning, to be followed by the procession of the image or the “Traslacion.”

The “Traslacion” commemorates the transfer in 1767 of the revered image of the “Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno” from Intramuros to Quiapo.

The CBCP added that the icon, placed on a shoulder-borne carriage known as ‘andas,’ is carried in procession by marshals. (CBCP/RJB/JEG-PIA-NCR)
