Philvolcs report: 3,143 participated 2011 earthquake drills in Capiz, Iloilo

by Alex A. Lumaque

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Jan. 7 (PIA) -- About 3,141 participants have joined in 13 earthquake drills conducted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in Capiz and Iloilo provinces in 2011.

The figure excludes an undetermined number of Sapi-an Municipal Hall and Capiz Provincial Capitol Building employees who also participated in the earthquake simulation exercises last March 23 and April 7, respectively.

Based on PHIVOLCS – Capiz records, most of the participants are students, faculty and staff of various schools and government officials and employees.

The drills were conducted at Capiz Commercial School, College of St. John – Roxas, Little Learners School, Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion main campus, Roxas City Hall and City Health Office buildings, Pilar Municipal Hall, Capiz State University (CapSU) – Bailan, Pontevedra campus and Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO).

PHIVOLCS has also recorded earthquake exercises at the Department of Health (DOST) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Regional Offices in Iloilo City last year.

PHIVOLCS – Capiz head Ramil Atando said that the drills were in collaboration with the Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) – Capiz, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Philippine Red Cross (PRC), among others.

Atando added that there were nine earthquakes felt in Capiz last year ranging from intensity 1 to 3.

The province has only minor earthquake generators called as “thrust fault” which are not even charted in the PHIVOLCS earthquake generators map. (JSC/AAL-PIA 6 Capiz)
