San Miguel Group and DOLE III forge Kapatiran Wise-TAVby Joelyn G. Baluyut
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Jan. 8 (PIA) -- To promote decent employment and a safe and healthy workplace and to better boost the morale of workers in Central Luzon, the Department of Labor and Employment Region III (DOLE) collaborated with San Miguel Group and its 40 subcontractors.
The forging of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was made to fully effect the “Kapatiran Work Improvement in Small Enterprise - Training and Advisory Visit (WISE-TAV),” and was led by DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, DOLE Regional Director Leopoldo De Jesus, Assistant Regional Director Geraldine Panlilio, Brenda Villafuerte of the Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC) and executives from San Miguel.
According to Baldoz, the slogan of the said program is “KAPATIRAN WISE-TAV para sa mas ligtas, malusog at produktibo na mga Manggagawa,” (KAPATIRAN WISE-TAV for a safer, healthier and productive employees) that aims to encourage and empower large companies like San Miguel, whose engaging in third-party contracting to provide technical assistance to their service contractors in promoting compliance to labor standards as well as productive, safe, and healthy working conditions in the latter’s workplace.
The three large companies of the San Miguel Group namely San Miguel Brewery, Inc., San Miguel Metal Closure, and San Miguel Yamamura Packaging Group will be the Big Brothers while their respective subcontractors are the Small Brothers.
“I assure that DOLE will be coming up with programs and trainings to capacitate San Miguel Group’s subcontractors with knowledge and information for the proper implementation of labor standards and occupational safety and health standards at the workplace,” added Baldoz.
Kapatiran WISE-TAV also encourages big companies that practices Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to coach small companies to eventually become fully compliant with labor laws and the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards.
The program is anchored on the International Labour Organization’s (ILOs) WISE, whose action-oriented approach has long proven to link Productivity and Product Quality to safer and better workplace conditions.
It also made use of the TAV approach of the Labor Standards Enforcement Framework (LSEF) which aims to ensure compliance with labor laws and OSH standards. (WLB/JGB- PIA 3)
