NE mulling sports program expansion

by Lyndon Plantilla

CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija, January 8 (PIA) -- Nueva Ecija executives are looking into developing local superstars in volleyball, swimming and other sporting events aside from cagers.

Board Member Anthony Umali (also known as Doc Anthony) bared this plan before the opening of the quarter finals of the Nueva Ecija Collegiate Basketball League (NECBL) last Thursday.

NECBL, a collegiate basketball tournament akin to NCAA and UAAP, is fully supported by the provincial government.

Fighting for the NECBL supremacy at the Araullo University Gym in this city are the AMA Titans, Central Luzon State University Green Cobras, College of Immaculate Concepcion Kings, Good Samaritan College Crusaders, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology Phoenix, and Wesleyan University Philippines (WU-P) Knights.

Doc Anthony urged universities and sports event organizers to work with the province to promote other sports and help young Novo Ecijano athletes find venues to show off their skills.

He said Nueva Ecija will never know what it has until local sports talents are tested in competitions.

The idea of expansion, Doc Anthony added, was brought about by suggestions they have received from various sports fans and supporters.

Sports suggestions included Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Taekwondo and Boxing. (WLB/LDRP PIA-3)
