Eastern Visayas records biggest decline of dengue fever cases in 2011

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Jan 9 (PIA) –- The intensified anti-dengue campaign was deemed very successful as Eastern Visayas posted the biggest decline of dengue cases among the country’s regions in 2011.

The Department of Health Regional Office 8 said that the dengue cases in Eastern Visayas decreased by as much as 93 percent compared to the 2010 dengue incidence.

Boyd Cerro, nurse, disclosed that in 2011, the region posted 855 dengue fever cases with eight persons dead from the ailment.

On the other hand, in 2010, Eastern Visayas posted one of the highest number of dengue fever cases in years with 12,596 cases and 95 deaths.

Cerro cited the sustained intensified campaign and the cooperation of all sectors in the community for the decrease in the number of dengue fever cases in Eastern Visayas.

“The decline of dengue fever cases in the region could be attributed to our sustained campaign. Of course, we could not have achieved it without the support from other sectors like our local government units and our communities,” Cerro said.

Cerro cited the Department of Science and Technology that developed a special-devise called the mosquito trap, which was piloted in Tacloban and placed in several schools and barangays of the region; this to a large extent, contributed to the nose dive of dengue fever cases.

The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas under the leadership of director Edgardo Gonzaga is glad that the general public is now aware on how to best combat the spread of dengue fever in their community.

The health official said that although dengue cannot be totally eliminated as it is endemic in the region, the best that could be done is to reduce the number of cases.

With the successful anti-dengue campaign in 2011, the Department of Health in Eastern Visayas is inspired to continue the intensified campaign against the ailment.

The 93 percent decrease of dengue fever cases of the region was reported to be the biggest decline in the country with Western Visayas coming in second with an 89 percent decrease.

In 2010, Western Visayas had 26,514 dengue fever cases which declined in 2011 with only 2,863 cases.

Meanwhile, Central Luzon, particularly Region 3, posted the biggest increase of dengue fever in 2011 compared to 2010 cases. In 2010, the region had only 8,493 dengue fever cases which ballooned up to 22,555 dengue fever cases or a whopping increase of 165 percent. (PIA 8)
