Six Fishermen held for dynamite fishing in Bacoor

BACOOR, Cavite, Jan. 10 (PIA) -- Six fishermen were arrested on January 5 by members of the Bacoor Bantay Dagat Patrollers (BBDP) after receiving information on the illegal activity and caught the suspects red-handed.

The six arrested fishermen were identified as Chito I. Bundac, Danny Gonzales, Elvin Gonzales, Virgilio Collado, Marvin Idiong, Omar P. Tajal, all residents of Barangay Zapote 5. They are now detained at the Bacoor police station in Barangay Talaba for violation of Republic Act 8850, otherwise known as the National Fishery Law (NFL).

Dynamite fishing, an illegal method used by some fishermen, is one of the prohibited acts under the said law. It destroyed the surrounding ecosystem and underlying habitat (such as coral reefs) of the fish. It has harmful effects to nature; these explosives can imperil the lives of the fishermen.

BBDP recovered from the arrested fishermen four bottles of improvised dynamite, two fishing boats, tilapia and banak fishes caught using dynamites. Said items were turned over to the Municipal Agriculture Office for proper custody.

Mayor Strike Revilla commended the BBDP identified as Alberto Eusebio, Marcelito Narvaez, Elmer Perante and Rodolfo Biancaflor for their vigilance in patrolling the Bacoor Bay.

Under the leadership of Mayor Revilla through its Municipal Agriculture Office, they are strictly implementing the National Fishery Law by regularly monitoring the Bacoor Bay and its surrounding area and having it 24/7 patrolling team guard the safety of the sea and its inhabitants.
