City gov’t issues firearms to SCAA members in Butuan City

by Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 10 (PIA) –- Some 124 members of the Special Civilian Active Auxiliary (SCAA) here have received their issued firearms from the city government after complying a series of military procedures.

According to City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima, chairman on Committee of Police Matters and Public Safety, the issued firearms are composed of carbine rifles, A14 rifles, and garand rifles.

Culima said the city government, through the Sangguniang Panlungsod see to it that all firearms issued have corresponding documents for legality.

“Thus, necessary document were put in place first that is why the issuance of said firearms was done this time,” he added.

The official also said SCAA members must be issued with firearms to augment the police force in an effort to maintain peace and order, as well as to help in solving the prevailing crimes that is happening in the city.

Further, he stressed that with the issuance of firearms, SCAA members will now be deployed in crime-prone areas of the city.

Culima added the move was made by the city government after incidents reported that criminals tend not to respect the SCAA members because they know that they (SCAA) don’t have any firearms.

“With this, criminals will now have a second thought of doing such crime if they see the presence of our SCAA members,” he said.

With these developments, Culima urged the entire police force here to be at all times ready to respond to whatever crimes that is happening in the city. He also said police personnel should intensify their campaign against criminals.

It can be recalled that during the first week of this year, series of holdup-robbery incidents took place from January 1 to 3, and as of press time, suspects have not yet been identified. (PIA-Caraga)
