PIA Press Release Tuesday, January 10, 2012 PWDs in Kalinga rehab center given assistanceby Larry Lopez TABUK, Kalinga, Jan. 10(PIA) -- About 156 persons with disability (PWD) and their parents received assistance from the joint outreach program of the Cubao Rotary and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO). Bing Haddac of PSWDO said the distribution of used clothing, toys, personal items and cash last week was part of the post-Yuletide project of Cubao Rotary in coordination with PSWDO. The group chose the Lin-awa center where PWDs hold Special Education for Persons with Disability (SPED). Through the SPED, most students of the center acquire skills in sign language, which used to be offered at centers outside the province. Run by the catholic nuns, the rehabilitation center gets support from the provincial and city governments for its services. Haddac said the center has extension program of referring interested PWDs for further trainings like reflexology at other rehabilitation centers outside the province. In other instances, PWDs seeking for medical treatment sought referrals of the center and are referred to hospitals and sometimes given sponsors. For its part, Haddac said PSWDO grants a scholarship to selected and qualified PWDs who study at government colleges. At present, there is one PWD scholar who is fourth year college taking Civil Engineering course at the Kalinga- Apayao State College, Haddac said. As encouragement, Haddac urged interested applicants to visit their office and take the regular screening for the scholarship slots in the coming school year, 2012-2013.(JDP-LL, PIA CAR,Kalinga) |
