Army development efforts gain resultsby Aurora J. Casimpan
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Jan 11 (PIA) –- The development efforts undertaken by the military in some rebel infested areas in Eastern Visayas have gained positive results.
The 8th Infantry Division Armed Forces of the Philippines based in Catbalogan City, Samar through its engineering battalion and assisted by national and local governments, have been constructing roads and bridges in interior barangays where rebels are.
This resulted positively since a number of rebels decided to join the folds of the law. Development efforts are for civilians living in remote areas through the provision of access roads and bridges.
Lt. Colonel Niceforo Diaz, chief military operations declared that the construction of roads and bridges is part of the military operations in defeating the rebel group aside from the continued military operations.
Diaz said that 25 former rebel members have surrendered and laid down their arms since Major General Mario Chan assumed his post as 8th ID commanding general last August 2010.
The military constructed roads in areas identified as rebel infested are the Gandara-Matuguinao road, San Jose de Buan-Matuguinao road, all in Samar; and the Silvino Lobos-Las Navas road in Northern Samar. (PIA-8)
