Kalinga schools urged to conduct quarterly general cleaning

by Peter A. Balocnit

TABUK CITY, Kalinga,Jan. 11(PIA)-- All elementary and secondary schools in the four districts of this city will conduct general cleaning on school compounds from 8:00AM to 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 14.

This was agreed upon during the meeting this week between the City Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) Environment Committee chaired by Councilor Antonio Bakilan and the four district supervisors regarding the implementation of Provincial Ordinance No. 2008-007 providing for the quarterly cleaning every 1st or 2nd Saturday of the first month of the quarter.

“I observed during my committee’s visit in some schools last December that many schools are not maintaining a clean and orderly school,” Bakilan said adding garbage are thrown everywhere and grasses are tall in the surroundings.

James Bangibang, District Supervisor of Northern Tabuk District; Severina Dakiwag of Eastern Tabuk; Wilson Bulwayan of Western Tabuk; and Herminigeldo Amoyen of Eastern Tabuk District assured they will coordinate the clean-up drive with their school heads and teachers.

Bakilan authored said ordinance designating the quarterly general cleaning when he was Board member of the province.

The Ordinance mandates the active participation of the parents-teachers association (PTA). Section 5 of the ordinance provides that PTAs shall fine P50.00 members who deliberately absent themselves during the general cleaning.

Bakilan said the regular conduct of clean-up drive in schools is to prevent the occurrence of diseases caused by waste and pollution particularly keeping off mosquitoes to breed on dirty environment.

“A clean school will not be a breeding ground for malaria and dengue carrying mosquitoes and an orderly one will project a good school image,” he said.(JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
