Robredo pushes inter-LGU cooperation, partnership with private sector

by Dani Doguiles

KORONADAL CITY, Jan. 11 (PIA) -- Local government units should form partnership for mutual benefits, Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse said in his message during the 72nd Foundation Anniversary of this city yesterday.

Assistant Secretary for Mindanao Affairs and Special Concerns Nariman Ambolodto read Sec. Robredo’s message to more than ten thousand residents and visitors gathered at the South Cotabato Sports Complex for the anniversary convocation.

Mayor Peter B. Miguel explained that on Monday Sec. Robredo called to apologize that he could not come because he needs to manage government response to the terror threat in Metro Manila during the feast of the Black Nazarene and to inform him that Ambolodto will read the anniversary message in his stead.

“At present, the department is pushing the concept of inter-LGU partnership where rich LGUs may extend helping hand to poor LGUs,” Secretary Robredo said.

In this manner, he said programs and projects of the needy local governments may be provided with necessary assistance.

“At the same time, neighboring LGUs can collaborate with and support each other to address common problems,” he continued.

For instance, he said, LGUs may combine resources to buy fire trucks and heavy equipment which may be difficult to acquire if allocated from budget of a single LGU.

Partnership could also be beneficial to cooperating LGUs by providing support in disaster response efforts, in solid waste management and other mutual concerns.

Secretary Robredo also emphasized the need for LGUs to work with private sector and civic society organizations.

“Their engagement with local government units do not only enhance transparency by reviewing how funds are allocated but also increase the legitimacy of the local government by opening dialog and building consensus,” he explained.

He said the department is now looking into institutionalizing non government organizations and government organizations partnership in each local government unit.(PIA-12)
