50 lactation rooms established in region 2

50 lactation rooms established in region 2

by Oliver T. Baccay

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Jan. 12 (PIA) –- With the massive advocacy of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) region 2 of strict implementation of the exclusive breastfeeding program, 50 breastfeeding rooms were already established in the whole of Cagayan Valley.

In the report of NNC, 20 regional health units (RHUs) have complied with the provision of the breastfeeding code by installing lactating rooms, 16 hospitals, four Local Government Units, six government agencies and 4 in public places.

Gisella Lonzaga, nutrition officer III, said they continue to encourage all establishments, especially those that have potential lactating employees and clients, to install their breastfeeding rooms or even just a cubicle.

She stressed out that establishment of a breastfeeding room is a requirement to all health offices, government agencies and even in the public places to fulfill the breastfeeding code of the Philippines or the implementation of the exclusive breastfeeding of babies from 0-2 years of age.

She further said that they have been advocating exclusive breastfeeding of lactating mothers as it gives complete vitamins to the babies which they need throughout their lives to fight against illnesses.

“We also urged other establishments to have their own breastfeeding rooms not just for compliance with the breastfeeding code but to help achieve good health and nutrition of each child in the region,” Lonzaga stated.

NNC is optimistic that more breastfeeding rooms will be established this year as they continuously monitor public and private establishments, especially those that are mandated by the law, in putting up their breastfeeding rooms. (TCB/OTB/PIA-2)
