Mt. Province supports 600 scholars

by Juliet Saley

BONTOC, Mt. Province, Jan. 12 (PIA) -- Giving primacy on education, the provincial government has assisted about 600 college students from poor families in the province under its Provincial Education Financial Assistance Program.

Governor Leonard Mayaen reported this in his state of the province address before the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan here on Monday.

“With their allowance increased from P2,500.00 to P3,000.00 per semester, enough to pay in full the school fees in any state college, it is expected that they will complete their courses and land jobs to sustain them and their future families,” Mayaen said.

Student grantees of the province are not only enrolled at the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College and Xijen College of Mt. Province, but also in other state colleges/universities outside the province such as Ifugao, Nueva Viscaya, Isabela and Baguio City.

The governor also bared that eight of the student grantees are enrolled as scholars at the University of the Philippines- School of Health Sciences wherein four of them are taking up Doctor of Medicine while the others are first year students under the ladderized health educational system.

“This is a special educational program where the local government is obligated to pay miscellaneous and other school expenses of the grantees. After graduation, the local government is likewise bound to employ them since they are mandated to give two years of service for every year of studying in the university. Until then, they will be allowed to work outside the country,” he said.(JDP/JBS-PIA CAR-Mt. Province)
