3 Leptospirosis cases reported in Dumaguete City

by Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 12 (PIA) -- Three cases of Leptospirosis due to the flood brought about by tropical storm 'Sendong' were reported in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

This was confirmed by City Health Officer Dr. Ma. Sarah Talla who said the afflicted persons are from the villages greatly affected by the typhoon that hit the province on Dec. 17, 2011.

A statement from the City Information Office said the patients, who are currently undergoing treatment, are residents of Poblacion 8, Brgy. Cadawinonan and Brgy. Taclobo.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the Leptospirosis bacteria found in the urine of rats.

Talla explained that a person gets infected if he or she comes in contact with contaminated water such as flood water and sewage.

Symptoms include high fever, headache, conjunctival suffusion or red eyes, calf muscle pain and skin turning yellow.

Other warning signs are low blood pressure or hypotension, cold and clammy skin, cyanosis or trouble in breathing, seizure, low amount of urine and bleeding manifestation.

The city government of Dumaguete is currently conducting an information campaign for the prevention, treatment and control of Leptospirosis, said City Information Officer Steve Gabriel.

Talla warned the public not to take said disease for granted as it may lead to death if left untreated.

Prevention measures against Leptospirosis include using boots and gloves if exposed to contaminated water, getting rid of containers with dirty water, killing rats that carry the bacteria, maintaining clean surroundings, and cleaning tables and other surfaces of spilled food that may attract rats.
