Country’s action plan on nutrition taken up in Ilocos forumby Freddie G. Lazaro
STA. MARIA, Ilocos Sur, Jan. 12 (PIA) – The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) for 2011 to 2016 will address the problems of hunger, child undernutrition, maternal undernutrition mineral and vitamin deficiencies and increasing overnutrition. It will also be the basis of National Nutrition Council (NNC) direction and programs.
Ilocos region’s nutrition program coordinator Victoria N. Mañez said the PPAN 2011-2016 was drawn based on the 2008 national nutrition survey.
She said that through the PPAN, the NNC can help in the reduction of hunger and improvement in the country’s nutrition situation. This is also in line the objectives of the country’s Millenium Development Goals (MDG) – 1 which are the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015 and the reduction on the prevalence of under-weight-for age under-fives and percentage of households with inadequate energy intake.
To address these challenges, she said, the government will embark on a massive advocacy campaign on the proper care and management of the pregnant women, and infant and young child feeding practices, which includes exclusive breastfeeding. Other campaigns include micronutrient supplementation, food fortification, home-based production and consumption of foods rich in Vitamin A and iron, and so on.
Local government units also need to implement action plans based on the national nutrition plan.
Mañez recently presented the PPAN during the 4th regular meeting of the members of the Regional Organization of Nutrition Development Advocates (RONDA) at the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) main campus this town.
