NTA Cagayan highlights 2011 accomplishmentsby Thelma C. Bicarme and Marineth S. Cadiente
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Jan. 14 (PIA)-- The National Tobacco Administration - Cagayan Branch said it successfully implemented four projects last 2011 such as registration of tobacco farmers, tobacco growing scheme, seed production, and farmer’s organization and development projects.
NTA branch manager, Dr. Corazon Riazonda, said they were able to register about 4,229 tobacco farmers and a total area of 2,218.41 hectares planted to three types of tobacco, namely, cigar filler, barley, and batek.
The registration of tobacco farmers is a yearly activity in order to keep the NTA abreast with the total number of the farmers for possible assistance from the Tobacco Growers Assistance Program as well as the provision of scholarship programs to the farmers’ qualified dependents.
Under the seed production and distribution project, the NTA produced true-to-type tobacco or those that are free from pests and diseases and this is very much welcomed by buyers and foreign buyers.
The NTA is the sole tobacco agency mandated to improve the economic and living conditions and raise the quality of life of tobacco farmers.
This also includes those who depend on the industry for their livelihood and promote balanced and integrated growth and development of the tobacco industry to help make agriculture a solid base of industrialization. (TCB/MSC-PIA 2)
