TOFIL awardee cites Nueva Ecija experience as inspiration to pursue healthcare reforms

by Lyndon Plantilla

CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija, Jan. 15 (PIA) -- One of 2011's “The Outstanding Filipino” (TOFIL) awardees was a doctor who served Novo Ecijanos in the late 80's.

Pathologist Ramon Nery was honored by TOFIL for Public Service Thursday last week at the Heroes Hall in Malacanang.

Along with four big names in various professions, Dr. Nery was notable for serving the poor in Mindanao and contributing reforms in the delivery of healthcare services in Mindanao particularly in Dapitan City and Misamis Oriental.

Improvements in provincial hospitals in Misamis Oriental like trainings for surgeons, 24-hour laboratory services, online consultations and hospital services to OFWs were attributed to the efforts of Dr. Nery.

Before his tour of duty in Mindanao, Dr. Nery used to work at the Pathology Department of the Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center (PJGMRMC) in Cabanatuan City.

The TOFIL Facebook Account said the PJGMRMC under Dr. Nery's helm, “gained accreditation from the Philippine Society of Pathologists and allowed to conduct teaching and training in clinical and anatomic pathology.”

PJGMRMC's Dr. Hubert Lapuz said the hospital was happy over Dr. Nery's achievements.

Local radio station DWNE Senior Reporter Mel Ciriaco recalled her fruitful collaboration with Dr. Nery during bloodletting operations of the Nueva Ecija Chapter of the National Voluntary Blood Services. Dr. Nery was vice-chairperson of the service.

Ciriaco said Dr. Nery had a big contribution to the refinement of the blood program and in the popularization of blood donation in the province.

Ciriaco added, together with Dr. Nery, they were able to convince a lot of people to join bloodlettings.

Dr. Nery believed his Nueva Ecija experience motivated him to push for reforms in the public healthcare sector throughout his career.

“Seeing one patient gets well, one patient undergoing operation…” said Dr. Nery, “…with the programs we have started that made the operation possible is enough motivation for me to go on.”

Aside from Dr. Nery, the other 2011 awardees are Dr. Jesus Estanislao for Governance, Former Trade and Industry Secretary and Philippine Stock Exchange Chair Jose Pardo for Business, Sylvia Pendon for Entrepreneurship and Dr. Emerlinda Ramos for Education.

President Benigno S. Aquino III was also present during the awarding ceremony.

TOFIL aims to pay tribute to men and women, aged 41 years old and above, who have significantly contributed to the advancement of their profession, public welfare and national development. (WLB/LDRP PIA3)
