DOLE increases SPES funds

by Maritess B. Beñas

BANGUED, Abra,Jan. 16(PIA)-- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has increased the funds for its Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) for the year 2012 to generate more income in the countryside and help bring students back to school.

Dr. Emerito Narag, provincial head of DOLE – Abra called for an emergency meeting of the provincial and municipal managers of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to solicit their support and assistance in the campaign for more employers to participate in this year’s SPES program in order to accommodate more students who are in need of employment to be able to raise money for their schooling.

The funds for the SPES program in the province tremendously increased from P700,000.00 last year to P3.9 million for this fiscal year 2012.

The increase in the funds allocation for the SPES program is just one way in which DOLE addresses the increasing concerns for employment particularly on the need for placement nationwide which continuously grows by the millions each year.

Narag further explained that with the 53,000 placement needs in the Cordillera region, the province of Abra has a fair share of 5,000 which DOLE hopes to address particularly through the implementation of the SPES program.

Normally, the SPES program requires the participating employers to put up their own counterpart in the salaries and wages of the SPES beneficiaries. The employers benefit from their participation because they are given the opportunity to avail of a subsidized labor support.

The students are the end beneficiaries because they are able to employ their spare time to learn at the same time earn for their school fees for the coming semester since the mechanics of the SPES is that, a greater portion of their earnings are allotted for their school fees.

With the increase in the funds allocated for the SPES program this year, more local government units as well as academic institutions and business establishments are expected to participate.(JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR,Abra)
