PDRRMC-LU’s efforts in battling disasters recognizedby Miriam P. Aquino
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Jan. 16 (PIA) -- In recognition of its work in disaster response and rehabilitation operation, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of La Union (PDRRMC-LU) received a Certificate of Recognition from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-Region 1 (RDRRDMC 1).
Ceremonies were held last week at Camp Brigadier General Oscar M. Florendo, Parian said Victor Dacanay of the Provincial Information and Tourism Office.
The PDRRMC-LU is chaired by Governor Manuel C. Ortega.
The event was graced by Usec. Proceso T. Domingo from the Special Concerns Office of the Office of Civil Defense, representing USEC Benito T. Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Speaking in behalf of Ramos, Domingo called for strengthened partnership between the government and the private sector and further encouraged everyone to have their own “kalasag” or shield through an enhanced awareness on disaster preparedness to be able to protect themselves and their families.
Likewise, P/Chief Supt. Franklin Jesus B. Bucayu, Police Regional Office 1 Director, lauded the awardees for their exemplary display of excellence on disaster risk management and humanitarian assistance, saying “the shield that you received is a proof of your remarkable contribution in responding to disasters and calamities, and of your dedication in providing assistance to victims.”
Board Member Alfredo Pablo R. Ortega, Committee Chair on Disaster Preparedness and Management Relief Services, received the award in behalf of Governor Ortega.
Marc Christopher R. Ortega and Engineer Bryan G. Ronquillo, Presidents of the La Union Lifeguard Association and the Disaster Response Team of La Union, respectively, also received awards of recognition for their outstanding performance during their tour of duty.
After the awarding ceremonies, USEC Domingo witnessed the ground breaking ceremonies for the La Union Disaster Preparedness and Evacuation Center led by Gov. Ortega.
The proposed evacuation center will be erected at the Provincial Capitol Compound in keeping with Ortega’s belief that the effects of mother nature’s wrath could be mitigated through a well-equipped PDRRMC with skilled and responsive volunteers.
