56 Ifugao studes participate in Regional STEP competition

by Vency D. Bulayungan

LAGAWE, Ifugao, Jan. 16 (PIA) -- Delegates from the province composed of 56 students and coaches participated in this year’s Regional Student Technologists and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines (STEP) held recently in Atok, Benguet.

The elementary level landed second place over all while the secondary level placed fourth.

“This is in celebration of the 10th year of the implementation of the STEP as a program and as an organization which highlights the relevance of skills development in the areas of Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) and Tech-Voc,” said DepEd Supervisor Jane Dulawan and STEP Coordinator.

All schools organize their STEP with a set of officers and members. As a functional organization, pupils/students are taught skills that they can use to earn a living while in school.

They are taught entrepreneurial skills such as in the elementary, the following are skills taught: appliqué, fresh fruit shake preparation, flower arrangement, tie dye, asexual plant propagation, fabric hand painting, medicine kit shelf making, metal tool box making, simple circuit making and retail trades.

For the secondary level, the following are the skills: cake decorating, summer dress making, cocktail mixing, casual hair style with facial make-up, table skirting and table setting, dish gardening, 20 watt amplifier, auto engine tune up; steel balusters; knock down toddler study table; residential wiring installation; electronic bookkeeping; electronic poster making and business planning.

Aside from these skills, schools are given the option to teach skills applicable in their locality, Dulawan said. STEP in the province is funded by the Provincial SEF (Special Education Fund) through the Provincial School Board chaired by Governor Eugene Balitang. (JDP/VDB- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
