2011 calamities damage infrastructure worth P65M

by David M. Suyao

AGUSAN DEL SUR, Jan. 16 (PIA) -- Tropical storm Sendong and other calamities that hit Agusan del Sur last year damaged infrastructure worth P65 million.

According to report by Asst. District Engineer Poncio Vencilao of DPWH 2nd District, seven areas under their jurisdiction were affected.

These include Barangay Sta. Maria, Trento, Agusan del Sur where a bridge approach that connects Davao provinces, Agusan del Sur and Bislig City was damaged. This has affected travel time of commuters to and from the Davao provinces, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur and Bislig City.

According to Engr. Vencilao, some P10 million is needed to repair the said infrastructure.

A portion of the concrete national road in Langkilaan, Trento was also damaged when it was submerged in floodwater up to five meters deep, according to District Engineer Reinerio Zerda of DPWH Dist. II.

Aside from those two major infra that were damaged, there are also major roads and bridges in Loreto and La Paz towns that were damaged due to floodwaters. “But we are glad there is no casualty that was recorded,” Engr. Zerda said.

The agency is working for the release of funds for repair of the damages. It had conducted talks with 2nd District Representative Evelyn “Bebs” Mellana regarding damages to infrastructure.

“As of the moment, the damaged portions are already passable,” Engr. Zerda said. He warned, however, that more damages may be incurred if these were not immediately repaired. (PIA-Agusan del Sur)
