Special election fever starts in Zambales

by Allen M. Villa

IBA, Zambales, Jan 16 (PIA) –- Election preliminaries for filling up the vacant 2nd district congressional post officially starts in the province today with a three-day period for filing of certificate of candidacy.

The seat became vacant with the death of Congressman Antonio M. Diaz in August last year due to sickness.

Based from the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Resolution 9304, campaign period will be from January 19 to February 2 and election day is on February 4 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Five candidates are expected to vie for the vacant position composed of Liberal Party candidate Attorney Cheryl Deloso-Montalla, Lakas-Kampi’s Alfred Mendoza, Rica Victoria Diaz of the Nationalista Party, Board Member Wilfredo “Jun” Pangan, and provincial administrator Jun Omar Ebdane.

Atty. Deloso-Montalla and Mendoza were both runners up during the last congressional election in the district which former Rep. Diaz won, with Deloso-Montalla coming in at close second.

Young blood Rica Diaz is a daughter of the late congressman while Jun Omar is the son of incumbent Governor Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr.

No one from the five expected candidates has filed their candidacy as of press time.

In a send off program for his son who resigned as provincial administrator, Gov. Jun Ebdane asked the public to remain vigilant but calm during the campaign period and on election day.

He also asked that despite the presence of “big ticket” political parties in the province, in the end, Zambaleños must remain as one united party for the development of Zambales. (WLB/AMV/PIA Zambales)
