Abra Electric Coop warns public vs constructing buildings near high voltage lines

by Maritess B. Beñas

BANGUED, Abra, Jan. 16 (PIA)-- The management of the Abra Electric Cooperative (ABRECO) had warned the public not to construct buildings near the lines of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines(NGCP) because of the hazards it may cause.

Loreto P. Seares, Jr., ABRECO general manager issued this warning to the general public to refrain from constructing buildings near the NGC lines because of the dangers posed by the high-voltage electrical lines not only to the properties but most especially the people who will soon occupy said buildings.

Seares also stressed that individuals who plan to construct new buildings are required to submit to ABRECO their electrical plans of their buildings duly signed by a professional electrical engineer to ensure that the building plan had followed the appropriate hazard prevention measures.

The general manager likewise issued a warning prohibiting the outright relocation of existing service lines of the ABRECO without consulting with their Engineering Department.

“Please refrain from doing the relocation by yourselves without the supervision of ABRECO.

Please consult first with the Engineering Department because we need to survey the relocation of the lines to determine whether these lines that need to be relocated are primary or secondary lines in order to prevent fires.” Seares emphasized.

Furthermore, the case of barangays in need of additional and new connections in their sitios likewise need to consult with the Engineering Department. The barangay council is required to pass a resolution to the Board of Directors of ABRECO applying for new connection.

Seares sternly warned the general public not to make additional or new connections on their own because there are standards that ABRECO had set and that need to be observed and strictly followed to ensure public safety especially fires.

Seares also took the opportunity to apologize for the unscheduled power interruptions which he explained that these are more often than not, beyond the control of ABRECO as they also often get flat-footed on such instances.

Relative to power interruptions, Wilson Bolante announced a pre-scheduled brown out on January 26, 2012 from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and at 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. He said these NGCP power interruptions are scheduled for regular check of their systems. (JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR-Abra)
