PIA Press Release Tuesday, January 17, 2012 PAGASA says wind convergence may bring rains to Mindanao in next 24 hrs.by Rutchie Cabahug-AguhobOZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, Jan. 17 (PIA) – People living near the mountain slopes and in low-lying areas of region 10 and their respective local disaster risk reduction management councils (DRRMC) have been alerted for possible flash floods and landslides. This, after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomic Services (PAGASA) has issued on Jan. 16, General Flood Advisory No. 4 for Northern Mindanao, stating that there will be moderate rains in Mindanao in the next 24 hrs. brought about by the wind convergence affecting the island. The waterways likely affected by this weather condition are the streams and tributaries of all the rivers and streams of the region’s five (5) provinces, particularly:Oroquieta River in Misamis Occidental, and Odiongan River, Tagoloan River, Cagayan de Oro River, Manduloy River, Cabulig River and the other nearby rivers in the province of Misamis Oriental. Agus River, Liangan River, Maranding River, Mandulog River, Dapao River and Mataling River in Lanao del Norte. Meanwhile, in its Public Weather Forecast issued at 5:00 a.m., today, Jan. 17, PAGASA said Mindanao and Eastern Visayas will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the East into Northeast over Mindanao and the coastal waters throughout the Philippine Archipelago will be moderate to rough. Fishing boats and other small sea crafts in the region are also advised not to venture out into the sea, while larger sea vessels were alerted against big waves, Regional Director Ana Cañeda of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), region 10, Chairperson of Regional DRRMC, said.
