Tabuk youth expands tree planting area

by Larry Lopez

TABUK, Kalinga, Jan. 17(PIA)-- Expanding their greening project area, members of Tabuk Youth Community Service Club (TYCSC) added 400 new seedlings of narra and mahogany to its tree planting sites in Sitios Eleb and Talacca, here.

The TYCSC activity over the weekend also included the re-fencing of seedlings earlier planted in the sites and clearing of pathways. Planted along the road, the seedlings are prone to attacks from stray animals and have to be attended to regularly.

This prompted the club members to develop the “weekend habit” of visiting tree planting sites to nurture the seedlings, making sure their efforts just do not go to waste.

Organized early last year, club members have planted over 10,000 seedlings of various tree species that are now growing in different project sites, the club’s big contribution to the greening program of government.

With the approaching dry season, the group also sought the help of the Bureau of Fire Protection if it can extend the services of its water trucks to water the seedlings.

Because of increasing greening activities, members of the club, who are sometimes branded as “youth for environment”, now actively participate in the Save Mother Earth campaign.

City Councilor Anthony Bakilan, founder of the TYCSC, said the city government has tapped this youth club as strong partner in its advocacies towards control and prevention of Global warming.

Among its other concerns at present is the campaign against use of plastic bags by the business, spearheaded by the Chamber of Kalinga Producers, Inc. (CKAPI).

According to Bakilan, the club launched its own campaign on this early last year and he said the members are very happy with the latest advocacy of the CKAPI.

TYCSC is calling on other youth in the community to share the cause for Mother Earth and the care for trees and the environment. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR,Kalinga)
