Catbalogan involves barangays, civil society in disaster readiness plans

by Ninfa B Quirante

CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar, Jan 17 (PIA) –- The Catbalogan City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (DRRMC) is involving the barangay officials and civil society groups like React Philippines, Alert Philippines, and Kabalikat Civicom in the council as it strategizes plans in response to disaster.

Nida Arosa, City Social Welfare and Development officer, said that because it is the barangay that is directly affected, Mayor Coefredo Uy suggested that barangay chairmen of those barangays at risk should be involved in planning for disaster preparedness.

Catbalogan wants to enable barangays and organize their own command system and put up an early warning systems - these will be put up in the barangays that are at risk of flooding and landslides.

The city of Catbalogan LDRRMC met last Friday and is meeting again today to finetune the different plans conceived with the 20-member team headed by the mayor.

Arosa said that they were divided into three teams, that the new members will be trained to respond to emergencies.

“We have also included the civic groups like Kabalikat Civicom as they have helped us in the past respond to calamities,” said Arosa.

Mayor Uy and Elliot Lopez, the acting leader of the DRRMC believe that the presence of the alert civic society groups will enrich the planned responses of the local disaster risk reduction team. (PIA 8-Samar)
