Philhealth urges members to pay annual contributions before the implementation of the new rate

by Oliver T. Baccay

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Jan. 17 (PIA) -- The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC) has urged its members and sponsors to avail of the incentives by paying their annual contributions before the implementation of the 100 percent hike in premium contributions.

Cesar Sales, chief of field operations division, said that starting July 1 of this year, all premium contributions will increase by 100 percent. As per resolution of the board of directors, members are given up to June 31 to pay their annual contributions to avail of the incentive.

Sales said that hypothetically, using the old rate, a member will only pay P1,200. But, if a member pays his annual contribution from July to December of this year, the computation of their contribution will already be based on the new rates which will be pegged at P2,400 or double the amount of the old rate.

That is why we urge the members to pay now their annual contributions so that they can avail of this incentive. If they already paid their annual contributions for this year, they will already be assured of health benefits up to 2013, Sales said.

Sales further said that the rationale behind increasing the premium pay of members is to ensure financial capacity of the corporation to finance services for the identified poor individuals as targeted in the DSWDs National Household Targeting System (NHTS) which gave birth to the Universal Health Care program of the present administration.

He said the universal health care program provides free health services to all enlisted indigent beneficiaries whenever they are brought to the hospitals. (TCB/OTB/PIA-2)
