NFA assures Ilocanos sufficient rice in 2012by Cherry Joy Discaya
LAOAG CITY, Jan. 18 (PIA) -- The National Food Authority (NFA) in Ilocos Norte said the province has sufficient rice supply for this year.
According to Engr. Fortunato Bulao, the province a a rice stock of 112,000 bags.
Bulao said that although their office did not meet the procurement target of 240,000 bags of palay last year, they always ensure that they have enough stock to meet the Ilocanos daily consumption.
Since Ilocos Norte is considered as a surplus province for rice, NFA is helping other regions by supplying them with the province’s excess rice. However, the agency is set to prioritized the Ilocanos.
“Our office ensures that there is enough stock of rice for the province before supplying other regions who have shortage of rice, we are prioritizing our people,” explained Bulao in a radio interview of ‘PIA Hour’.
Even in lean months such as June, July, August and September where high demand for rice is expected and rice stock will suffice the demand until the end of this year since subsequent months like October, November and December are harvesting months, Engr. Bulao said.
