by R.G. Cadavos

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte Jan. 18 (PIA) –- The Department of Public Works and Highways Regional Office 8 awarded the Southern Leyte Engineering District (SLED) as best throughout Eastern Visayas Region through the Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence Committee or PRAISE for year 2011.

DPWH-SLED clarified the four categories in the selection of best engineering district such as the Comptrollership and Financial Management for Division with 20 percent, Construction and Material Quality Control and Hydrology division - 30 percent respectively and Maintenance 20 percent for a total of 100 percent.

“SLED got a total rating of 77.65 percent in the regional evaluation for best district engineer (Engr. Carlos Veloso) and assistant district engineer (Engr. Manolo Rojas), according to The Reporter On Line. It also bagged the best materials engineer with Engr. Leonides Olarte and maintenance engineer in the person of Engr. Allan Eway, it added.

It was learned that Leyte IV Engineering District that topped the construction category followed SLED with 77.01 percent while Leyte Engineering District garnered 74.81 percent.

Southern Leyte and Borongan engineering districts are considered first class districts based on the longest national highways and roads covered by each district, the source added.

Meanwhile, Vesloso in a press conference, revealed that funds amounting to P145 million for the district’s projects for 2012 are already available.

“For the first time in my whole career as district engineer, funds for programmed projects are being released in January,” The Reporter On Line who was with the press quoted Veloso, adding that this was the intention (to release funds early) of DPWH Sec. Rogelio Singson that all projects of government will be smoothly implemented. (RGC/PIA-SoLeyte)
