Southern Leyte to initiate Barangay Tanod Congress

by R.G. Cadavos

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Jan 20 (PIA) –- The province of Southern Leyte will initiate a one-day Barangay Tanod Congress tentatively scheduled on March 1 that will tackle the issues regarding barangay tanods.

In a meeting held with Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) PPOC members, Tuesday at the governor’s office here, Gov. Damian G. Mercado announced the upcoming Congress and requested the body to file a resolution authorizing the release of funds in assistance for the said congress to be conducted at Maasin City gymnasium.

The congress recognizes the importance to all barangay tanods as frontliners of peace and order and should be supported. Kits will be given away that contains flashlight, batuta, handcuffs, tear gas and other items tanods will find useful during their time of duty. In addition, each tanod will be given an accident insurance.

There will be at least 533 Barangay Tanods that are expected to grace the affair to include all the Chief Tanods of every barangay throughout the province, though, municipal mayors will be requested to let all their tanods attend the one-day activity. ” Each municipality is requested to send all their tanods and to provide their transportation, while the provincial government through the PPOC will provide the lunch and snacks for the attendees,” Mercado disclosed.

There are a total of 3,452 barangay tanods provincewide; all barangay tanods of Maasin City are expected to participate.

Other participants to the upcoming tanod congress are the provincial officials, municipal/city mayors, vice mayors, peace and order barangay chairmen, PPOC members, fire marshals, among others concerned.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Army (PA) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will give some inputs and share a lecture on the laws that can be implemented by the local tanods.

The PPOC also filed a resolution inviting DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo to grace the Barangay Tanod Congress. (RGC/PIA-SoLeyte)
