Lucena city gov't appeals support for ‘rivers resuscitation program’by Lito M. Giron
LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Jan. 20 (PIA) -- Lucena City Mayor Barbara Ruby Talaga urged city residents to help the city government in the preservation of Dumacaa and Iyam rivers in this city.
Speaking during a meeting with members of ‘rivers resuscitation program’ committee, Mayor Talaga said “this is the time, that all residents must show support to resurrect the natural features of the two rivers.”
The mayor admitted difficulty in resurrecting the rivers without the support of the people. She added that if everybody will work, all the goals of the city government to bring back the old feature of the rivers will come in reality.
Part of the rivers resuscitation program is the ‘clean-up activity’ where people residing near the river banks will encourage to participate aside from imposing penalty to those who caught dumping their trash in the rivers.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dante Diamante, former chairperson of city disaster risk reduction management council (CDRRMC) presented the scenario occurred in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan that may be happened too in this city because of the same topography.
It was also agreed during the meeting, the construction of ‘ri-rap’ in all the river banks to control soil erosion and landslide. (PIA-Quezon with report from Aida C. Dapula, PIO-Lucena)
