More Kalinga elderly to benefit from social pension program

TABUK, Kalinga, Jan.20(PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development listed 497 new beneficiaries under the social pension program for senior citizens in the province.

Eusebia Haddac of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office said the 497 are added to the existing 588 beneficiaries bringing to 1,085 the total pensioners under the program here.

Of the new pensioners, 73 are from Balbalan; Lubuagan,81; Pasil,79; Pinukpuk,63; Rizal, 37; Tabuk, 44; Tanudan, 67 and Tinglayan,53.

According to Haddac, the listing was prepared by the municipalities and was validated by the municipal social welfare and development officers (MSWDO) who submitted the final record to DSWD.

Granting of the P500 monthly socialized pension to indigent senior citizens is provided under Republic Act 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.This aims to help provide dignified living to the elderly sector of the country.

Beneficiaries to the program are elderly citizens without other sources of income for a living, aging 77 and above. However, those aging 76 and below until 60 could be accommodated provided slots given to the municipality concerned are still open, Haddac said.

Pensions are released every quarter of the year by DSWD directly to beneficiaries through the MSWDO. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR,Kalinga)
